Williamsburg County -- A Recipe for the Good Life
Hemingway Barbeque Shag Festival
Each April, Hemingway becomes a town filled with sights, sounds and smells that are sure to put some sand in your shoes and some savory roasted pork in your belly. The annual Hemingway Barbeque Shag Festival is a weekend-long event that "pits" barbeque cookers from all across the area against each other in a cookoff contest of taste. In addition, there are vendors, fair rides, lots of food options, local talent, and beach music to make the two-day festivities exciting from start to finish.
Chefs start their cookers on Friday night under the long awning at the Hemingway recreational fields and usually cook everything from barbequed chicken to chicken purlieu for family and friends who stop by for some friendly food and fun. The buzz of conversation, the squeals of children on rides, and the strains of foot-tapping beach music bring the area alive after dark, and the activity doesnít stop all night, since the serious cooking gets underway after the crowds have died down. Thatís when the barbequers crank up their mobile pits to create their own scrumptious secret recipes of barbequed hog hoping to win the coveted title of Best Barbeque the next morning. Early on Saturday morning, judges start the tasting as the stage area is hopping with local talent and the ever-popular world-famous Hogettes.
